Emir of Kano Stoned at Swearing-in Ceremony
From Yakubu Musa in Kano

The swearing-in ceremony of new Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, was yesterday marred by unruly behaviour of miscreants, who used the occasion to stone and boo the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

However, the action of the thugs, believed to be supporters of Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), was sequel to the recent solidarity visit the emir paid to President Olusegun Obasanjo alongside the immediate past governor of the state, Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso.

When the emir, arrived the Sani Abacha Stadium, venue of the swearing-in ceremony, the miscreants began to boo him.

As soon as Bayero sat on his seat at the VIP stand, one of the miscreants stood up and displayed Obasanjo's portrait with inscription: "Bamu Obasanjo" (Obasanjo must Go). In what appeared like an organised plan, other miscreants promptly responded by booing the emir.

"Bama son son Kano Bama son Muna fiki," meaning "we don't want emir, we don't want a traitor", they shouted.

Later, the miscreants resorted to hurling missiles at his direction, using slippers, shoes and other objects to stone him.

However, security personnel quickly built a security cordon around him, and forced the protesters to back off.

It would be recalled that Bayero had early this week issued a statement, pointing out that his visit to Aso Rock was misconstrued as it was not an act of betrayal as perceived by many people in the state.
