Golden Falconets Fly Over S/Africa From Ernest Ekpenyong in Abuja
Pre tournament favourites, the Golden Falcons of Nigeria last night in Abuja concluded their campaign for honours in the ongoing Abuja'2003 All African games on a golden note, beating their south African opponent by a lone goal to clinch the gold medal of the event.
The Nigerians who dominated the game from the start had to wait till the 85th minute of the tenson soak encounter to confirm their supremarcy of the South Africans who were confined to their half throughout the game. After numerous misses and close shevles, it took the initiaive of the enterprising falcons Captain, Rita Nwadike whose long pull out from the fringe of there South African eighteen for Blessing Igbojionu to make the difference from a goal mouth melee. With this victory, Nigeria which is presently leading on the medal table, has increased her medal haul to 63 golds, beating their arch rivals, south Africa who settled for a silver, to the third place. Egypt whose male team was beaten in the first round at the Calabar centre are presently occupying thre second palce on the table with 60 golds. An Elated Falcons Captain, Rita Nwadike who dedicated the victory to Nigerians for their support, said the win has once again restored Nigeria's pride as the power house of female soccer in Africa and predicted that the flacons would continue to reign supreme for a long time. The South African skipper Delisile Mbatha who stood between the falcons and early victory, congratulated the Nigerian for their hard earned vicotry and blamed the lone goal she conceeded to defensive lapse that allowed Igbojionu to score the late winner. |
