Adebayo said this whilespeaking in Abuja, yesterday, at the opening of the 24th ordinary session of the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU), Administrative Council meeting and Third Technology based Postal services (TECHNOPOST), and urged the union to embrace information technology.
He said government has entered into partnership with some organisations, with a view to ensure provision of information in the rural areas.
"Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has supported Nigeria Postal Services (NIPOST), in its efforts to computerise its operations.
"Approval was given for NIPOST to provide internet based services to the public at all its offices in Nigeria, in conjunction with two private sector companies, Develop-ment Venture International and ABG (Nig) Limited.
This led to the establishment of the joint venture company called NETPOST (Nig) Limited," he said.
With the development, he said "all post offices will be hooked on-line with modern V-SAT technology, to provide electronic and internet related services such as internet access, e-mail, e-post, e-commerce, e-cash transfer.
our postal outlets could also be used for the distribution of inputs, dissemination of information to rural areas and other services", he said, while noting that NETPOST has since entered into alliance with Oceanic Bank PLC to offer Western Union Money Transfer in all the post offices.
On the proposed Sub-regional land route for mail circulation in Africa, Adebayo noted that Nigeria was in full support of the project as it would ensure daily exchange of mail among West African countries and drastically reduce the transmission time of mail between countries of the sub-region.
The sub-regional land route, according to the minister, would have the salutary effect of promoting commerce among the people of the sub-region.
