Nigeria loses N426m crude oil daily, says agency

DUE to a number of factors, the nation loses more than 70,000 barrels of crude oil each day. When quantified, the amount of money lost by the country daily in the oil sector, is put at more than N426 million ($3 million).

This was disclosed at the weekend by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) Project Manager for the Nigerian Communication Satellite (NIGCOMSAT-1), Mr. Rufai Ahmed.

Ahmed told reporters in Abuja that Nigeria was losing more than 60,000 barrels of crude oil to illegal bunkerers.

Another 10,000, he added, were lost to natural causes.

He attributed the lost to economic saboteurs as well as old and dilapidated pipeline, which, he noted were laid more than 30 years ago.

Ahmed said that the agency had articulated a proposal to ensure effective monitoring of the pipeline in the country with a view to curtailing the excesses of the bunkerers.

"Our proposal, which will be based on the deployment of the Nigerian satellite, will require the installation of remote sensing devices at strategic points along the over 70,000 kilometres of pipeline criss-crossing the country.

"The stand alone remote sensing device will trigger an alarm anytime there is an incursion of about 30 meters to the pipeline and send signals to the satellite for immediate response," he said.

He said that the yet to be launched NIGCOMSAT-I was equipped with an L-band services with the capabilities of providing geo-referencing data for precise location of intruders on the oil pipeline.

Ahmed said that the monitoring proposal included the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) capable of operating 31 kilometres above the earth surface with high-resolution camera for real time images.

He said that the agency would require about N600 million for the effective deployment of the satellite in the monitoring of the pipeline.
