One hundred and forty years may seem like eternity, especially
as regards somebody’s age. However, Ozo Ezegwuja Nwaeze
is a testimony that even today, people can live long. Surprisingly,
at 140, he is agile and still going strong.

Indeed, Pa Nwaeze could be termed a unique man. At his age,
he still practises his vocation: Herbal medicine. He has five
wives and scores of children.
Background
My names are Ozo Ezegwuja Nwaeze of Owerre Ugwu Edem-Ani in
Edem, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
God knows the oldest, but I am sure to be the oldest in the
two communities. During our own days (years back), we count
our age with festivals. I am sure that I am above 140 years
old.
Do you still remember a particular festival during which you
were born?
Yes. The Omaba and Egba Chukwu festival.
Being an elderly person, do you face or experience
any challenge from the ancestors?
No. I believe uprightness has a big role in the lifespan of
every individual. I do them no wrong. I am not partial. I
don’t support evil. That is why the ancestors don’t
challenge me. I call a spade a spade.
Are you a Christian, Muslim or traditionalist?
I am a traditionalist. But I believe in Chukwuabiama (Almighty
God). I worship Him in my house.
Being a traditionalist, you must have married more than one
wife, right?
(Laughter) Yes, my daughter. I am married to five women with
children. I am in love with all of them. After all, I married
them with my money and so I must love them equally.
So how do you sustain them?
I used to be a farmer those days and a herbalist. After each
farming season, I sell some of the produce and keep some back
in my barn for the upkeep of the family.
You said you are also a herbalist. Which area do you specialize
in?
Well, people misconceive the idea of being a herbalist, maybe
because some people engage in some dirty acts. I specialize
in helping people out of their various problems.
I used to accompany my late father to the bush each time he
went out for the stuff (the herbs).
What are some of the problems people come to you with?
They come with different kinds of sicknesses and other life’s
problems. I charge them handsomely. That’s part of how
I sustain my family.
Can you still see clearly at your age?
Yes, I see clearly and I hear clearly. However, I have very
sensitive ears to recognize my children by their voices.
What is your favourite food?
I like pounded yam and Ogbonno soup as an Ozo title holder.
What is your vision of life?
My vision is for everybody to live and prosper in the fear
of Chukwuabiama.
How many more years would you want God to add to your lifespan?
I am ready to meet Him any time any how, because I have accomplished
my responsibilities here on earth and I am happy my children
are progressing, too.
