Internet connectivity for Nigerian schools will take 1,000 years - World Bank 23.02.2007 Friday, February 23, 2007

The report “Review of Nigeria Science and Technology Education in Federally-Funded Institutions” said the current rate of ICT deployment at post-basic level was slow.

It said a non-profit organisation, School net Nigeria, was the only agency in the country involved in the promotion of connectivity among the country’s schools.

“In the last three years it placed networks of computers in almost 120 secondary schools, a little over one per cent of the total,” it said.

The report noted that the computers were new operate Microsoft platforms and software, adding that the schools chosen were in groups within easy reach of commercial support of companies that oversee the work and training.

There was no initial cost of the installed network to the schools, but they would take over the maintenance cost after the first year of operation,” the report said.

It said Internet connectivity usually provided via a VSAT link cost about 300 dollars per month per school. “At such a cost, the lack of any dialup system for Internet services imposes severe limitations on the usefulness and affordability of land-based Internet links,” it added.

The report which involved international and national study consultants, experts from the British Council, said the services provided by School net Nigeria was very expensive and far from sustainable.
