ABUJA — Two ex-governors, James Ibori and Lucky Igbinedion, have been asked to refund N60 billion worth of assets and cash to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Vanguard gathered the ex-governors were at the EFCC headquarters yesterday as part of the on-going investigation by the Commission to explain how they managed the funds of their states during their tenure.
Vanguard sources revealed that the N60 billion refund was the only condition given by the EFCC to the ex-governors as a way out of their present predicament.
Some former governors had appeared before the Commission over allegation of corruption during their tenure as governors of their respective states.
Ex-Governors Chimaroke Nnamani and Joshua Dariye had on Tuesday reported before the commission for questioning over the manner they managed funds of their states.
Further findings by Vanguard revealed that Igbinedion and Ibori who are known to be very close friends arrived the EFCC headquarters about 2 p.m. yesterday and immediately went into a closed door session with the chairman of the Commission lasting almost six hours.
The ex-governors' session with the EFCC chairman which followed similar pattern, Vanguard also learnt, centred majorly on some of the huge sums of monies traced to their various accounts and on the several properties they were said to have acquired during their tenure.
Both governors were alleged to have acquired several properties while they were in office running into billions of naira.
However, Vanguard could not confirm whether the ex-governors agreed to abide by the Commission’s proposal.
Attempts by Vanguard to reach EFCC's spokesman, Mr Osita Nwajah, to shed light on the matter was not successful as his mobile phone was switched off.
