Nigeria coach Berti Vogts said on Thursday insecurity is a reason why he does not stay in the West African country.

The German-born coach’s comments came after an assassination attempt on Nigeria international striker Obafemi Martin in Lagos.

Unmasked gunmen fired repeatedly at the England-based striker’s Mercedes and although he escaped unhurt, his friend was injured.

Vogts lives in Germany and flies  to  Nigeria  before  any match, although this move does not go down well with many Nigerian officials who think the coach should stay in the country.

The coach who replaced Austin Eguavoen in January told German daily Bild: “Perhaps everyone can now understand why I wouldn’t like to live in Nigeria. “Lagos is extremely dangerous now. If anyone is alone, he can’t leave the hotel where he is staying because of the constant assaults which happen.”

Nigeria have now qualified for the 2008 African Nations Cup although they still have to play the final round of qualifiers against Lesotho in September.
