Lawyers scramble for free condoms at conference
Thursday, August 28, 2008 Lawyers attending the annual delegates conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja fell over themselves on Wednessday to get free condoms.
The condoms were supplied by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the conference.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the condoms were displayed at the LOC stand in front of the auditorium of the International Conference Centre.
While some of the male lawyers helped themselves with packs of the condom, their female counterparts were edgy.
A female lawyer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said “lawyers are also fun seekers, so there is wisdom in distributing free condoms.”
Other side attractions at the week-long conference attended by about 8,000 delegates included patronage of food vendors who had pitched tents around the conference venue.
The delegates trooped to the food vendors’ tents to satisfy their palate, arrangements made for feeding by the LOC notwithstanding.
Meanwhile, a cross-section of lawyers at the event complained about the organisation of the event and the non-availability of conference materials and bags.
In spite of the hiccups, the conference, which enters its fifth day on Thursday, is set to elect new national officers to man the affairs of the association for the next two years.
Already, Mr Oluwa-rotimi Akeredolu has emerged as the consensus candidate for the post of the president as there was no other contestant, while other positions would be contested for.
