A five-week-old baby girl that was buried alive has been recovered and saved from death following the intervention of Yobe State Police Command, Damaturu.
Commissioner of Youths and Social Development in the state, Yusuf Yahaya, confirmed the incident to newsmen in his office in Damaturu. He revealed that the incident took place on June 23, 2008.
According to him, some 'Good Samaritans' were passing by the Damaturu- Gujba graveyard when they sighted a hand of the baby on a grave and immediately informed the police. It was discovered that the baby, whom the police rescued, had been buried hurriedly alive by unknown persons.
The commissioner informed that the baby was rushed to General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu, for proper treatment as all the ears of the baby was filled with sand. She was at press time hale and hearty.
Yahaya further revealed that the police then reported the case to the department of social welfare, Damaturu, who then collected the baby and took her to the government remand home while the police continue their investigations to fish out the culprits.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Yobe State Comand, Mohammed Padah, said investigation is still intensive to bring the culprit(s)to book and prevent further occurence.
Sunday Independent investigation gathered that the baby had since been named 'Ramatu' by the social welfare office.
A concerned citizen, who does not want his name in print, said: "I wonder why such an act should occur in a state that is legally operating sharia law. Where are the sharia monitoring committees? We should be fair and stop deceiving ourselves."
